The 5+1 Manga 2 set

Another Set 5+1 Copic Ciao!

This one was quite complicated and experimental. I could have done a simpler example, but since I have used this set for two different designs before,on the Copic Italia blog, I decided to indulge in the technique by going creative.

First, like every set, I experimented with all the combinations and overlays to get as many different shades as possible. Once finished, with the palette under my eye I did some testing, in this case on the computer, roughly, to give me an idea of what overlays to use and where. I also tested a couple of different types of paper to make sure I got the best rendering, in this case I used Premium Bond from Copic Paper Selections (the purple one).

I don't know about you, but for me this planning phase takes a whole afternoon!

Various tests of the colors in the Copic 51 manga set 2

All the dark parts are obtained by various passes and overlays. First R59, muted with a little E21 to soften the brush strokes, and then followed by BG49 and B05 or B45. In this way by dint of passes of cool colors the red is muted quite a bit, The boy's hair follows the same criterion, but only with R59 and B05.

E21 is the "glue" that appears just about everywhere, it tonalizes and makes everything look smoother.

Essential is the Tip to Tip technique, tip to tip, where you smear the tip of one Copic with the color of another and then "dump" it on the paper getting small, very intense shades. (Sometimes I use a little bit of the ink that dries around the edge of the cap and tip and with the tip of the lighter color I melt it a little bit like it was a watercolor tablet, it helps me dose the shading).

The bench and chairs are also made with the same technique.

And here's the experimental part: I often found myself using watercolor markers, for other reasons, and it was intriguing how they could be watercolored just by passing a wet brush. I thought to myself, "Why not try the same thing with Copics?"

So I used a small plastic palette on which I rubbed some copic and simply added a few drops of alcohol instead of water, which I then spread with the help of a brush to get the curtain glazes.

It was really fun!

Final touches with extra fine Molotow One4all white acrylic, corrections on the line with Multiliner Copic Black, and here is the final result.
